Our Camp Staff
Our staff is dedicated to enriching children’s lives through the camp experience.
Hermann Sons Life believes strongly in providing our campers with the very best staff! Most of our staff members were Hermann Sons Life campers and graduated from our own Counselor-In-Training Program working their way from junior counselors to senior staff members.
The staff to camper ratio (1:6) is better than the American Camp Association and state regulations require. All staff undergo criminal background checks, including the NSOPW and are each personally interviewed by the executive camp director. All staff must also participate in and successfully complete a Child Abuse Awareness and Prevention Training program as well as staff-development training.
Our focus on active supervision provides our campers with a safe, caring environment. Our counselors are dedicated to helping each child establish positive social interactions for the greatest camp experience possible.
Camp Director
The Executive Camp Director of Hermann Sons Life Camp is Ian “Gunner” Brassett. This will be Ian’s 37th summer working in sleep away summer camp programs. Beginning in 1988, Ian spent four years as a camp counselor before taking leadership and director positions in private summer camp programs in Pennsylvania and California. Ian joined Hermann Sons Life Camp in 2018.
In addition to his extensive camp leadership experience, Ian volunteers as a visitor for the American Camp Association.
Senior Staff
In addition to dorm staff, each dorm is supervised by an experienced staff member called a senior counselor. The senior counselor’s job is to supervise dorm counselors and ensure the campers are having a fun, safe summer camp experience, both within their dorms and at their activity sites. These senior counselors are supervised by head counselors and the executive camp director.
Counselors
Counselors are high school graduates and college students. There also is a group of junior counselors who are recent graduates of the Hermann Sons Life Camp Counselor-In-Training program. Prospective staff members are interviewed in person. Reference and background checks are required. Counselors participate in intensive staff development preparing staff to meet the responsibilities of caring for children.
Health Managers
The goal of our Camp’s health care policy is to ensure the health and safety of all campers and staff so they may participate in all activities to the maximum of their capabilities. Medical care by a licensed nurse or EMT is available 24 hours per day. They dispense medication, treat minor illnesses and injuries. Anyone requiring evaluation and treatment beyond the scope of the camp’s treatment procedures are referred to an appropriate facility and/or their own physician.
Hermann Sons Life Camp believes in a high level of communication with our parents. Parents are informed when campers require a clinic visit.
